Understanding the Patient Experience Survey Results at GP Surgeries

By Administrator , 11 January 2026

Every year the NHS commissions the reputable pollster IPSOS-MORI to conduct a survey of patient experience at GP surgeries throughout England. There are about 50 questions in the survey and the pollsters try to get a good number of people at each surgery to complete the survey. We now have results for many years.

The problem lies in how to interpret the results. If 90% of patients surveyed think that their surgery is good or very good - is that a good result? Put another way if 10% of patients say their survey is not good - is that good enough?

Two spreadsheets are attached - from which selections can be filtered and which can be sorted to point up particular aspects. One is for Reading for 2023-2025, the other for the whole BOB area and covers 2018-2025. in each the results for 6 key questions are presented in the form of a percentile rank showing where the practice stands in relation to all other practices in England with sufficient responses to that question. Each of the spreadsheet files have several sheets, indexed by the tabs along the bottom. The first sheet in each case, labelled READ ME FIRST contains an explanation of our presentation of the results, which users will find helpful.
